Queries have been the mainstays of data retrieval in the past and continue to provide valuable services One of the principal uses for queries has been as the basis for form and report designs With the development of the new form and report design capabilities in Access 2007, you might find that you do not need to create a query first, that you can do it right in the object design The Form and Report Wizards also help select the proper data by filtering records and adding calculated controls The next five chapters discuss designing standard and custom forms and reports, including user-interactive data entry forms, special reports used for printing envelopes and mailing labels, and charts and graphs that visually represent trends and other data

ow that you ve seen how to store data efficiently in a relational database and how to retrieve the information you want in exactly the arrangement that will be most helpful, it s time to look at how you can present the information to the world Information can be displayed on the screen in forms suitable for viewing or editing These forms can contain data from more than one table, and they have a custom appearance that enhances the understanding of the information and improves the chances for accurate data entry If you need to print the information, such as for an annual report or form letter, or simply to transport the information to the outside world, Access offers you a variety of reporting features You can even create a report that prints on preprinted forms, such as those required by the Internal Revenue Service This chapter begins the series that covers form and report development With Access 2007, designs of the two objects contain mostly the same ingredients, so these common features are discussed in this chapter Subsequent chapters delve more into features and capabilities that are limited to one object or another
